--6-22-08 The winds have finally subsided and it’s a welcome relief. The bass have been schooling up along deeper grass lines during the heat of the day and chasing bait early and late around shallow pepper grass. Start your morning with hard Top Waters and Soft Toad Baits or Jerk Baits and slowly work out to deeper Hydrilla. Skitter Pop’s, Chug Bugs and Yellow Magic’s will all work on the hard baits. For the Toad bite, the best I’ve found is the Stanley Ribbit. Color doesn’t seem to matter a lot, but finding areas that have active baitfish working the surface is the key. Once the sun gets overhead, large grass flats are the place to be. Buck Bay, Bear creek, 5 Fingers, Veach and Caney are all good choices. If you’re not a big flipper, try Trick Worms or Super Flukes fished with very light weights over the grass. If you like to flip em up, find the deepest grass edges and work a jig or naked craw worm on a half ounce weight. Black blue, watermelon, or black/brown/amber jigs are the 3 I keep on deck. Short flips ahead of the boat is the pattern, and when you get bit, work the area thoroughly. We have been hitting the crappie pretty good, but we have had to work for em. Seems as though the bite is about a month late with lot’s of fish still holding eggs. More and more are starting to show up on the tops and numbers are increasing weekly. Lot’s of new pics in my photo gallery, so go have a look. July is booked solid for Pontoon Crappie Trips, but I have a few dates left in August and quite a few in Sept and Oct. If you wanna book a trip, or just talk fishing, give me a call at 409-379-3474.
